Responding to the request of St Pauls’ School (Lam Tin), the College arranged an on-line workshop for 47 teachers on 27 June 2023. The workshop focused on the topic of “Strategies for how schools can make a difference in the age of AI” and aimed to help the teachers understand and apply AI in their teaching practices. The workshop consisted of two parts: the first part discussed the impacts, strategies, principles, and examples of how to implement the transformation from traditional to AI-enhanced education; the second part demonstrated two free generative AI tools, Perplexity AI and New Bing, which can help teachers create engaging and personalized learning activities for their students.
The workshop introduced 26 ways of transformation in the AI age, as suggested by the EDVOCATE. Among these ways, some of the most relevant ones for the school setting are Adaptive Learning (which can tailor the learning content and pace to each student’s level and progress), Lesson Planning, Test Preparation and Assessment, (which can help students prepare for exams and help teachers evaluate their learning outcomes). The workshop emphasized that AI is not a replacement for human teachers and that it should be used to enhance, not replace, traditional teaching methods. The workshop proposed five strategies for implementing AI in schools, with one being more urgent to set up a committee to review the impact of AI on education. The workshop also showed how to use Perplexity AI and New Bing, to create learning activities that incorporate the keyword syllabus and pedagogy. The workshop also tested some past DSE examination questions with suggested answers and showed how to generate similar questions for practice. The audience was pleased with the workshop and provided productive feedback.
