Australian meets Hong Kong art at a special event at UOW College Hong Kong (UOWCHK) on 21 December, the Opening Night of an art exhibition entitled “A Sense of Place”.
The collection includes works from well-known aboriginal artists from Australia, contemporary artists from the Illawarra Region in South-East Australia (the area around Wollongong), and contemporary Hong Kong artists. The Opening Night was attended by local artists Mr John Wong, and Ms Cassandra Lau, and Ms Bao Ho, three of 15 artists who were selected to present in this collection from over 170 submissions. Visitors were able to see the artwork on display with the aid of a map.
The event demonstrated the commitment of the University of Wollongong to display art on campus in Australia and its global campuses. “We hope that art will draw UOW Australia and UOW College Hong Kong closer, and ensure that our meaningful, and educational, collection of art works will benefit staff and students,” said Ms Currie Tsang, UOWCHK President.
The project looks to developing an art collection webpage that will include more detailed information on artists and images of all art pieces in the collection, to be coupled with an informative tour with an artwork location map, and guiding questions. This tour will be made available to UOWCHK students, as well as secondary school students across the territory. The tour to be developed will enable visitors to the Tai Wai campus to wander through the collection using the guiding questions to further develop their understanding of how art works, the variety of ways that artists represent place, and differences and similarities between Hong Kong and Australian representations.
