UOW College Hong Kong (UOWCHK) was the venue for hosting the 11th Cross-Straits Shipping and Logistics Conference (兩岸三地航運物流研討會) on 23 November 2023. Organized by the Institute of Seatransport (IOS), the conference was revived after a six-year hiatus due partly to the Covid epidemic and gathered more than 200 senior representatives from shipping companies, university scholars and relevant professionals from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Shenzhen.
“UOW College Hong Kong is honoured to host this event at the College’s new campus. The deep involvement of UOWCHK in this event indicates the college's unwavering commitment to maritime education and training services,” said Ms Currie Tsang, UOWCHK President. UOWCHK has a Bachelor of Maritime Services and Operations Management (Honours) programme which has been included in the Special Subsidies Scheme for Designated Professions/Sectors (SSSDP). The College has a well-equipped Maritime Laboratory as a learning facility.
The theme of the conference was "Sail to the Future, Talent, Technology and Sustainable Development", and speakers and participants explored aspects of education, training, policy, including how to attract talent, reduce loss, and review and look forward, put forward their own opinions and views. The event promoted a stronger bond between the shipping sectors of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Taiwan, deepening the understanding of the similarities and differences between the operations of the three places, with all parties learning from the experience, enhancing mutual capabilities, and achieving a win-win situation. Other interesting topics covered by the conference included carbon-reduction in shipping, the latest developments of Hong Kong as an arbitration centre, and the challenges to marine insurance and risks professionals.
