The Faculty of Science and Technology had organized field trips for 60 students who study CGE13215 Nature and Conservation in Hong Kong, on 8th and 15th October 2022.
The aims of the field trips are to let students :
- Experience and proficiency in practical knowledge for conducting biodiversity surveys and fieldwork in Fung Shui Woods;
- Broaden environmental awareness and nature-based experiences through outdoor learning activities in woodland habitats;
- Have an insight into Fung Shui Woods as a cultural-ecological landscape.
In the fieldwork exercise, students carried out an ecological investigation of the diversity of Pak Ngan Heung Fung Shui Woods by using transects and quadrats to collect quantitative data on plants. They also learnt how to identify some of the common organisms in a woodland. Besides, students have to use spherical densiometer and anemometer to measure canopy density and environmental parameters such as relative humidity and wind speed, respectively.
