Four senior year students of Bachelor of Aviation (Honours) in Operations and Management at UOW College Hong Kong happily got the chance to apply the aviation knowledge learned in their studies through work placement this year.
Although air passenger transportation has been greatly reduced by the pandemic of COVID-19, global demand for air freight transportation has, by contrast, increased. Through the efforts of the College, four students from UOWCHK were able to join the Hong Kong Air Cargo Terminals Limited (HACTL) at the Hong Kong International Airport as part-time cargo handlers for a 4-month period from January to May 2020. Their responsibilities included handling of air cargo consignments in the office and the allocation of aircraft space for cargo loading.
The College saw to it that their timetables were well-arranged in such a way that they could handle both study and work simultaneously. Feedback from their supervisors in HACTL was most positive. At the conclusion of the placement, the students were offered jobs to work as summer interns in the company. It is a likely prospect that, with the high demand for manpower in air freight industry, these students will be able to work part-time starting from September 2020.
