Staff at UOW College Hong Kong were able to get a glimpse of the capability of artificial intelligence and how it may improve the teaching experience in a workshop in early February 2025. At the workshop, Dr Charlie Choi, Vice-President, introduced participants to Magic School AI, a versatile tool designed to simplify and enhance teaching practices. Participants were shown how tools available on the platform could perform a variety of tasks, including PowerPoint generation, academic content creation, assignment marking, translation, text rewriting, YouTube transcript extraction, project-based learning support, and course planning.
With the streamlining of various administrative tasks, teachers could focus more on student engagement and creativity. Participants were particularly keen on probing the capability of the tool, including whether it could support high-level academic content and solve complex mathematical problems such as Laplace transforms. Additionally, participants explored its utility in assignment marking, noting its ability to provide detailed feedback and suggested changes, which could significantly aid course examiners.
Diverse tasks that the AI platform could perform ranged from generating lesson plans and rubrics to creating classroom activities and even lightening the mood with joke generation. Its features, such as document proofreading, student recommendation drafting, and image generation, were also demonstrated, showcasing its potential as a comprehensive teaching assistant. The workshop thoroughly demonstrated how the tool can save time, enhance creativity, and improve efficiency, ultimately revolutionizing the teaching experience.
