Twenty lucky students from UOW College Hong Kong earned a rich and rewarding cultural experience through their participation in the UOWCHK/UOWKDU Malaysia Mobility Tour in early June 2023. Being the first UOWCHK overseas study tour after a 4-year hiatus, the tour was organised and led by Senior Lecturer Mr Victor King of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. The group visited UOWKDU in Malaysia between 4 June and 10 June 2023.
The itinerary included academic workshops on inter-cultural communication, cultural diversity in the “One Belt, One Road” region by representatives from the UOWKDU Communication Department, a Taste of Malaysia Workshop where students were able to discover the beauty and uniqueness of Malaysian Local Delights, by a representative from Culinary Arts Department, a Batik Painting Workshop, as well as cultural excursions to Kuala Lumpur, the Twin Towers, the colourful Batu Caves, National Museum, National Mosque, Sultan Abdul Samad Building, Masjid Jamek KL, Central Market – Handicraft Centre and a whole day tour to the historical city of Malacca.
With such a rich programme and excellent reception by hosts KDU, the tour achieved its aim to enhance students' intercultural communication skills, cultural awareness and to foster harmonious interaction and relationship building with people from different nationalities and cultural backgrounds. Students were able to better understand the interconnectivity between HK, Malaysia and neighbouring regions as members of the Belt and Road Initiative and the opportunities which this will provide.
“The tour was certainly a rewarding experience and I wish we had more time. All our students enjoyed it very much and have a lot of happy memories,” said Mr King.
