Fifteen UOW College Hong Kong students, accompanied by a Senior Lecturer from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, experienced the magic of Malaysia and the warm hospitality of our University of Wollongong Malaysia hosts on their Malaysia Mobility Tour in 2-9 June 2024. The tour was the second one to UOWM following the success of last year’s tour.
Our students were treated to a rich and diverse programme that included three academic workshops, two cultural workshops, preparing and cooking Malaysian desserts, Batik painting, sightseeing tours to the most famous sights in Kuala Lumpur and a whole day excursion to the UNESCO World Heritage Site and historical city of Malacca, with its stunning colonial buildings and incredible heritage and culture. It was truly an amazing trip and has left our students with lifelong memories.
Syed Ahamed Saajid Shakir; Year 2 student of the Bachelor of Aviation (Honours) in Operations and Management, had this to say about the tour:
The study tour to Malaysia was a fun and captivating experience that expanded my cultural understanding of Malaysia. From the moment I arrived, I was immersed in the diversity of Malaysian culture. Engaging with locals allowed me to gain unique insights into their way of life and fostered meaningful connections. Exploring historical landmarks, tasting the delicious Malaysian cuisine, and witnessing the vibrant traditions. The study tour let me appreciate the cultural diversity of Malaysia and instilled a desire within me to continue exploring and embracing different cultures around the world.
The tour most certainly achieved its goals of enhancing students' intercultural communication skills, cultural awareness and fostering harmonious interaction and relationship building with people from different nationalities and cultural backgrounds.
Our students also gained a better understanding of the interconnectivity between HK, Malaysia and neighbouring regions as members of the Belt and Road Initiative and the opportunities this will provide.
Our sincere gratitude to UOWM for the excellent coordination, the warm hospitality, and the incredible experiences. We would especially like to thank the Malaysian buddies who made the trip extra special for our students.
