To demonstrate the College’s positive response to the Education Bureau’s call for supporting the national education of students and the building in them a sense of national identity, the College has started holding a weekly National Flag Raising Ceremony since January 2022. This regular ceremony is held at 9:30 a.m. every Monday, except on public holidays or days of special occasions such as the Government’s enforcement of social distancing requirements under COVID 19. Staff and students gather for the ceremony in the foyer area on 2nd floor of the classroom premises of UOWCHK Kowloon City Campus, Billionnaire Royale.
The National and Regional Flags at the foyer are raised respectively by the Assistant College Secretary and an Executive Officer/IT Officer and the occasion is presided by the College Vice President (Planning) or his designated officer from College senior management. Although the size of participants is constrained by the fact that the ceremony is held at normal lesson hours and that the busy office is unable to permit simultaneous release of a substantial portion of staff from their duties, the participating students and staff are all in joy and high spirit. The audience sing the Chinese National Anthem in devotion while watching the slow ascension of the National Flag and HKSAR Regional Flag in succession. The ceremony is usually completed in about one minute six seconds. Though brief as it is, the ceremony concludes with the touching moment of the flags reaching their pole-tips to stay flying. The ceremony is welcomed by staff and students alike as it is not just an occasion for their expression of support for our nation and the College, it is also one of a happy gathering.
